dcRedial Android App PDF Print E-mail

dc Redial IcondcRedial is a simple Android app that allows users to quickly and easily redial people.

Let me start by saying that I love my Motorola Droid, but when I got it, I didn't realize how much I would miss having a physical "talk" button. Basically, every phone I have ever used had a physical "talk" button, and if I wanted to call back the last person I spoke to, I could just press that button twice. The Droid doesn't have any such button, so the only way to call back the last person (that I could find) was to open the phone app, click the call log tab, select the last person, then choose to call them. So what was once a simple manner of two clicks (of the same button) now became a four-step process involving clicks all over the screen. I knew there had to be a better option, so I started out to create one.

dc Redial Screen ShotThat's how I came up with dcRedial. It's a very simple app (only one activity - developerspeak for a single page). Basically, it looks through the call log and creates a button to call back the last calls of each of the three main call types: incoming, outgoing and missed.

The first iteration of the dcRedial Android app is available in the Android Market as a free (ad-supported) version. This version just creates a button to call back each of the last three calls (based on the call types mentioned above).

The second version of the dcRedial Android app (called dcRedial Deluxe) includes context menu (long press) that allows you to call the contact, view the contact, and open the call logs. This allows you not only to call them back with one click, but also to send them an email or text (from the view contact option) or look further back in the logs for older calls. This version is currently in a closed beta, but should be released by early May 2010. It will be available for purchase and will contain no ads.

While the dcRedial Android app was designed specifically for phones without a physical "talk" button, it will prove useful for anyone with an Android phone. Basically, when you press the "talk" button twice on an Android phone, it will just redial the last call, but if the person you want to call back was a missed call that was a few hours (and several calls) ago, then you have to hide the dialer and scroll through to find that call. With the dcRedial Android app, you can just click once and see the last incoming, outgoing and missed calls and redial them with just one click.

The dcRedial Android app works best when you place a shortcut to it on your home screen, so that you can get to it with just one click, but it will function no matter where you click on it, so if you want to leave it in the drawer, that's totally up to you.

I'm always looking to improve my apps, so if you have any comments, questions, suggestions or complains, please leave a comment below. And keep your eyes peeled for the "Deluxe" version - scheduled (tentatively) for release in early June.

As always, I hope you enjoy this app. If you do, please consider donating (button on the left).
